Scott Malchus - Writer/Producer/Director
A native of Cleveland, Ohio Scott’s earliest memory of movies was a revival of “Gone With the Wind” he in 1977. Although the grandeur of the film swept him away, it was the tragic scene in which Scarlett’s daughter is killed in a riding accident. It was at that moment that he realized the emotional impact films could have on the audience and that scene, over all others in the classic film, has stuck with him throughout his lifetime.
While attending Bowling Green State University’s film studies program, Scott wrote and directed his first feature, The Brass Ring, a romantic comedy that utilized the campus surroundings and was highly regarded by his professors and peers. The film earned him the Lillian Gish Award for filmmaking (named after the first lady of silent cinema). In 1999, Scott wrote and produced a thought provoking dramatic short entitled The Mind’s Eye. The movie eerily took a new perspective on Alzheimer’s Disease, following a victim’s decent into madness through her eyes.
After submitting his feature script, Southern Cross¸ into the first Project Greenlight contest and making it into the second round, the romantic comedy was optioned by Ryan Johnson Productions in 2001. With a shoestring budget, Johnson, Malchus and a small crew shot the movie (with Malchus directing) in just 9 days during the spring of 2001. Soon thereafter, the movie was retitled King’s Highway. The final film was completed in 2003. Through Rivercoast films distribution, King’s Highway is being released on DVD June 10, 2008 Scott’s follow up to King’s Highway was the noir thriller, Deceit. The script was optioned by Eleven Eleven Productions in 2004 and filmed in 2005. The film starred Matthew Long, Emmanuelle Chriqui and Joe Pantoliano and premiered on Lifetime television in late 2006 before Thinkfilm released the DVD in early 2007.
Additional scripts Scott is developing include the horror film Blood Brothers; an adventure film, Ritual; a coming of age 80’s project entitled Finding the Way and a teenage romantic comedy, Closer to the Heart. Additionally, he has written episodes for the Cartoon Network series, is finishing up his first novel, and provides two weekly columns to the new popular culture website, Popdose. Malchus and his wife live in Los Angeles with their 2 children.
